HGR Construction is a fully licensed, insured, and bondable commercial general contractor, based in Winter Park, Florida. We serve the entire Southeast United States, including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama. Our project types vary widely, and include pre-engineered metal buildings, warehouses, tilt wall, structural steel, and masonry construction. Our client list includes Publix, Walgreens, Pier 1 imports, WalMart, Orlando Utilities Commission, Valencia Community College and many other retail and office building end users.
Over the last ten years HGR Construction has had the honor of being recognized by the Orlando Business Journal as one of the top ten construction companies in the Central Florida region. In the last three years HGR Construction has had the honor of receiving the Golden 100 Award, which recognizes the top 100 companies across all industries in the Central Florida Region, and the Fast 50 Award, recognizing the top 50 fastest growing companies in the Central Florida region. In 2016 HGR Construction received the Florida Fast 100 Award with the ranking of #29 in the Florida’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies.

History of HGR

Read about our humble beginnings

HGR Construction, Inc. was founded in 2003 and is a 150M+ annual revenue company, with over 100 well qualified construction managers and support staff. HGR has been profitable each and every year since inception, including through the arduous recession,due to long standing aligned relationships.

One key component in HGR Construction, Inc.’s successful history is that ALL corporate decisions are made locally, and the profits of our firm are REINVESTED in Central Florida, which can’t be said for firms that are headquartered outside Central Florida.

Other key components in our successful history is our passion for building and our strong relationships with the local subcontractor base. HGR is a mid-large sized, ($100M/annually) construction company – large enough to serve the needs of the Aligned Contractor program, yet small enough so that each project awarded will be significant. Our attention to managing the work correctly, will illustrate its significance to our firm.

In addition to the other key components to our success, our team and the team members we provide for each project ensures not only the projects successes, but HGR’s success as well. With each project provides a dedicated Project Manager, General Project Superintendent, and Project Superintendent, with additional management available as the workload requires.

  • HGR Construction, Inc. was founded in 2003, Darrin Griffin and Jim Rufrano.
  • The first year HGR Construction, Inc. had 10 staff members.
  • In 2005, HGR Construction, Inc. was named a Publix Super Markets, Inc. Aligned General Contractor.
  • In 2012, Carson Brownell, came on as Senior Vice President/Partner.
  • In 2013, HGR Construction, Inc. opened a satellite branch in Charlotte, North Carolina.
  • In 2014, Louie Akel, was promoted from Senior Project Manager to Vice President/Partner.
  • In 2014, HGR Construction, Inc. was named a Wal-Mart Aligned General Contractor.
  • In 2016, HGR Construction, Inc. has grown to 100+employees and built a new office in Altamonte Springs, FL to support the expanded team and new/upcoming projects.

Darrin Griffin

Darrin Griffin

CO-CEO | Partner

As a co-founder of HGR Construction, Darrin has been involved with every aspect of Commercial General Contracting, from on-site field engineering and project management to business development and business administration. As Co-CEO, Darrin is responsible for operations, business development and staff recruiting for HGR Construction. Darrin monitors project management procedures, oversees specific client and project expectations, and assumes project executive responsibilities on current and prospective projects. He specializes in construction management and team construction project delivery, where his experience and understanding of team construction are utilized. Darrin’s goal is to lead by example, to serve those with whom we work – clients, vendors and co-workers- by being intensely involved and professional while maintaining integrity in every relationship, and in doing so inspiring their trust and loyalty.

Jim Rufrano

As a co-founder of HGR Construction, Jim’s ultimate goal is to not only achieve the client’s vision, but to also surpass their expectation. As Co-CEO, Jim expedites and delivers products of the highest quality and craftsmanship, ahead of schedule. With over 15 years of hands-on experience, his accomplishments include building the fastest “Fast Track” supermarket, to date (at 79 days), managing the construction of over 1 million SF of industrial space and over 700,000 SF of retail space. Jim is directly responsible for overseeing all field related activities including monitoring budgets, maintaining precise schedules and solving construction logistics as well as subcontractor contractual compliance and safety. Jim’s keen attention to detail and problem solving, both in the field and in the office, enable him to consistently produce success.

Carson Brownell

Senior Vice President | Partner

Carson holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Building Construction from the University of Florida, and has over 15 years of experience in the construction industry. Carson has held nearly every type of position throughout his construction career: Pre-Construction Services, Project Management, Superintendent and Sr. Vice President. His experience in managing facilities ranging from retail, healthcare, class A office, distribution, and educational facilities has helped him develop a diverse portfolio of work, adding unique perspective and greater value to clients’ projects. Carson has managed over $40 million worth of work at a given time and has been involved in many fast-track projects, giving him the ability to anticipate, project and administer to the exact needs of the client. While fast-track retail is certainly one of Carson’s areas of expertise, he has also been a part of an Eagle Award winning team for a medical facility in Orlando. Carson is able to ensure successful projects by focusing on the development of key relationships with various municipalities, trades, consultants, employees and most importantly, the client.

M. Louie Akel

M. Louie Akel

Vice President | Partner

Louie holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Building Construction from the University of Southern Mississippi and is a member of Sigma Lambda Chi (National Honor Society for Construction) with 26 years of management & estimating experience in the construction industry. Louie’s diverse portfolio includes construction projects throughout the United State, many of which are recognized as national retail landmarks. Louie has successfully completed numerous regional malls with several nationally recognized developers, as well as numerous mall renovations and “big box” national retailers. As Vice President, Louie is responsible for the project management operations of the company, assists in estimating and business development. Louie also runs several projects personally to make sure that he continues to provide the clients with personalized service, stay in touch with the ever changing construction climate, and to show that the ownership of HGR is closely involved in the day to day operations of the company. Louie’s success in delivering projects on time and within budget is a testament to his ability to nurture relationships with clients (most of which are repeat) and all facets of the construction phase.
